Clivias
The
Hammett Collection
Dr
Keith
Hammett
has
the
largest
and
most
comprehensive
collection
of
Clivias
in
New
Zealand.
Built
up
over
more
than
a
quarter
of
a
century
the
collection
contains
accessions
of
all
known
species
except
the
recently
named
C.
mirabilis.
Clivia
miniata,
the
best-known
species,
has
been
bred
in
cultivation
for
over
a
century
in
countries
as
diverse
as
Belgium,
Britain,
Japan,
China,
Australia
and
the
USA,
in
addition
to
the
home
of
the
genus,
South
Africa.
Genetic
material
obtained
from
the
best
collections
in
these
countries
provides
a
unique
breeding
resource.
Clivias
are slow growing plants. Seed takes nine months to mature and plants
do not generally flower in less than five years from sowing. Plants and
seeds are offered to suit different purposes; good quality commercial seed,
plants for the landscape and Breeder’s Special Reserve seed for the dedicated
enthusiast.
Commercial
Seed
Yellow
Clivias
have
been
rare
and
in
much
demand,
but
are
now
becoming
more
readily
available.
Often
such
plants
have
narrow
leaves
and
are
not
far
removed
from
the
wild
form.
Keith
has
established
plantings
of
good
quality
yellow
Clivias
with
broader
leaves
and
larger
flowers.
Each
year
these
are
hand
pollinated
with
pollen
from
selected
named
yellow
plants.
Such
pollinations
produce
100%
yellow
offspring
of
good
quality.
At
the
same
time,
other
plantings
derived
from
crosses
made
earlier
between
high
quality
broad
leaved
forms
of
orange/red
flowered
and
yellow
Clivias
are
also
crossed
with
pollen
from
the
best
yellows.
Seed
from
these
yellow
backcrosses
produce
approximately
40%
yellow
plants
and
60%
red
or
orange
plants.
Yellow
plants
can
be
easily
identified
at
the
seedling
stage,
as
their
leaves
are
entirely
green,
while
orange
and
red
flowered
plants
show
red
pigmentation
on
their
leaf
bases.
The
advantage
of
yellow
plants
derived
from
these
crosses
is
that
they
are
likely
to
produce
plants
with
even
bigger
flowers
and
broader
leaves.
The
orange
and
red
plants
will
also
be
of
high
quality.
An
increasing demand for strong red clivias is developing. This
counterbalances the yellows and creams at the other end of the colour spectrum.
Seed from red parents is now available.
Commercial
seed

Breeder’s
Special
Reserve
Seed
Keith

member
of
the
Clivia
Society
based
in
South
Africa,
as
well
as

Club.
He
is
an
enthusiast

the
genus
and
is
exploring
ways
in
which
the
plant
might
be
developed.
In
the same way that New Zealand has established a reputation for good quality
racehorses and wine, it is becoming recognised as a hot bed of interest for Clivia.
Breeder’s Special Reserve seed is exactly that. Each year we make
seed available to other clivia fans from crosses which were made with a specific
goal in mind. We grow a proportion of each population to maturity, but
offer some for sale. Each cross is fully illustrated so that you can see
both Mum and Dad and can use your own judgement as to what to buy.
We are keen to explore all forms of Clivia so you will find large and small
flowers and forms ranging from tubular to reflexed. Look especially at the
various interspecific crosses on offer. We firmly believe that it is from
this area that the most exciting forms, colours and flowering times will occur.
This is a great opportunity to obtain top quality genetic material sourced from
around the world.
